Description

UV SW and LW

This is a UV fluorescent light box with a larger viewing area, commonly used for examining objects under both longwave (LW) and shortwave (SW) ultraviolet light. This allows for the observation of fluorescence, where certain materials absorb UV light and re-emit it as visible light.
Key features and applications:
  • LW UV: Generally utilizes a wavelength of 365 nm and is used to detect fluorescence in a wide range of materials.
  • SW UV: Employs a shorter wavelength (typically 254 nm) which can induce fluorescence in some substances that don’t react to LW UV.
  • Gemstone Identification: Helps gemologists identify and assess gemstones by observing their fluorescent properties, revealing their type or any treatments they may have undergone.
  • Larger Viewer: Provides a greater viewing area for convenient observation of specimens.
  • Dark Box: Designed to exclude external light, enhancing the visibility of fluorescence.
  • Safety Precautions: It’s crucial to avoid looking directly at the UV light, especially SW UV, which can be harmful to the eyes and skin. Appropriate protective eyewear and following manufacturer’s instructions are essential.
This type of light box is a versatile tool for professionals and enthusiasts who need to observe the fluorescence of various materials, from gemstones and minerals to currency and artwork.
